                           Chapter Reflection

We were given a project to complete in our speaking class. The task involved organizing into groups of seven to eight people and creating a Google Slide presentation based on a chapter and topic that the group was given to share with the class. Three groups were to present:

Group 1: Paying It Forward

This group's study guide covered chapters 5, 15, 16,  and 17.

Chapter 5 discussed nonverbal communication, how to identify it, and how to use strategies to improve someone's nonverbal communication.

Chapter 15 touched on how to deliver a good speech by using elements such as body language, speaking clearly, and subtle things like eye contact, to help connect more deeply with the audience.

Chapter 16 talks about the confidence a speaker needs to have in order to deliver information to the public, and also ways to give information to the audience and how informative speaking works. It also gives many types of persuasion tips to change the audience's mind.

Finally, Chapter 17 spoke on the history of persuasive speaking and how the concept of persuasive speech originated from Greece. It also reflected on the characteristics of logos, pathos, and ethos.

Moving on to the topic of the presentation, group 1 discussed paying it forward. The meaning behind paying it forward suggests when a person does a kind deed for another and instead of returning the favor to them, a good deed is in turn, done for another person. These types of acts allow generosity from others to flow throughout communities. The foundation of paying it forward is rooted in altruism, empathy, and the belief that small acts of kindness can have a positive impact on the world by inspiring others to do the same. The phrase "Paying it forward" gained popularity through the 2000s movie "Pay It Forward," which helped spread the idea and concept of making the world a better place through selfless acts of kindness. Examples of this can be babysitting for an exhausted parent, donating blood, giving away extra clothes, and many more!

I think this group did well on their presentation by providing background and information on not just the concept of paying it forward but on the movie that inspired the idea to become popularized in general. They also had nice visuals regarding the pictures, videos, and template, however, the only criticism i can provide is on the amount of words per slide. I felt like each slide was way a little too wordy, making it hard for the audience to decide on paying attention to the speaker or on reading the slides.

Overall, what I felt like I took away from this presentation is that giving to others in order to repay an act of kindness, is a selfless act that can help spread hope amongst our society and around the world. Paying it forward not only benefits the person who is receiving the act, but it benefits your own well-being because you had an impact on somebody's day, or maybe even life. While you do not have to do this everyday, doing it just a couple times can really help someone out, regardless of how small the act is. Small acts of kindness always go a long way and it will never hurt to do! :)

Group 2: Self-Care

This group's study guide covered chapters 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8.

Chapter 1 goes in detail about the nature of communication and the communication process. It discusses the several principles of communication and five tenets of ethical communication. It also addresses how to develop a personal communication improvement plan that anyone can use as a guide to hone your skills based on what you've learned.

Chapter 2 reviews the basics of sensory perception and explores how social perception influences self-concept, self-esteem, and how these self-perceptions influence communication. It also offers suggestions for improving self-perceptions, explain how and why people perceive others the way we do, and offer guidelines for improving our perceptions of others as well.

Chapter 6 explains what listening is and some of its challenges that most people often experience and how we must overcome those to actually listen effectively. It describes the steps involved in the active listening process and propose specific guidelines anyone can follow to improve your listening skills. It also provides suggestions on certain strategies to use and take in account for responding appropriately in different listening situations.

Chapter 7 describes three types of interpersonal relationships and provides guidelines for healthy communication in each of them. They explain the role of disclosure in the stages of relationship life cycles and offer ways to manage the dialectical tensions that can exist in any interpersonal relationship (Family, friends, significant other, etc).

Chapter 8 takes a look in how to create confirming messages when someone might want to provide emotional support to a partner who is experiencing emotional distress, share or keep private personal information, express a personal desire or expectation, and manage conflict.

The topic of this group's presentation revolved around Self-Care. There are many different types of self-care that they discuss, starting with work. A healthy work environment can help a person's mental health in many ways, including improved self-confidence, improved social functioning, and the minimizing of tension. However, a bad work environment can influence a person's mental health in various ways such as, causing stress, anxiety, depression, and it may also cause them to become an unsavory person. Next, is family. A healthy can help a person's mental state by increasing social support, helping with depression, feeling accomplished, and even helping a person's social cues. Whereas, a bad family can affect a person's mental healthy by increasing depression, detriment their social communication skills, and causes children to grow up in an unstable household and ultimately have a bad outlook on life. The group also went in detail on the American vs. World perspective on family and work. This being that Americans relatively view work as demanding and long, leaving little time for their families, loved ones, and themselves. However in other parts of the world, there is a stronger emphasis on the balance between work and family.

I believe that this group did good as well. They were straight forward about the topic, had nice pictures and videos, and spoke well. However, they happen to have the same issue as the first group in which they put too many words on one slide. It was very bulky and hard to read or pay attention to while the speaker was talking. The template they chose was also a bit bland and boring, but that might just be me nit-picking. Despite all of that, the presentation was entertaining especially with the short TikToks they provided.

What I took away from this presentation as a whole is that we should all embrace self-care as a journey of personal growth and self-discovery, rather than a rigid pursuit of perfection or an elusive quest for an ideal work-life balance. Harnessing self-care should be a means of understanding oneself better and begin nurturing a life that is rich in meaning and purpose. In conclusion, self-care and work can co-exist.
