 Chapter 3 Reflection

Chapter 3 was about intercultural communication, covering the effects cultures have on communication. It refers to the different communications between different cultures, culture impacts on society (is it positive or negative?), and gender roles in society (which can also be considered stereotypes). Of course, living in Hialeah, you have a personal understanding of intercultural communication, whether it is positive or negative. I honestly feel like I have more of a negative experience with this, mainly because my Spanish is not that good. I can get by with the little I know, but I can’t fully connect with those around me. With Hialeah being full of Cubans and may other Hispanics, sometimes it makes me feel left out because there are many things they can relate to that I can’t, and that is perfectly fine. It's just that sometimes I can be apart of a conversation and then all of a sudden I can't really be apart of it because I don’t understand what they are saying or cannot relate to it. And then the conversation ends up looking something like this….

I liked Chapter 3 because it helps you be open-minded to the different perspectives of others and their values, beliefs, and attitudes. I believe that understanding intercultural communication is essential for communities because it allows members to better understand and appreciate different cultures. It allows people to recognize and respect the values and beliefs of different cultures, creating a more inclusive and understanding environment. This can help bridge cultural divides, reduce prejudices, and create a more harmonious and understanding environment.

CHAPTER 9 REFLECTION

Chapter 9 is about communicating in groups. This is an important skill for individuals to understand because we interact with individuals every day, whether at work, home, or school. This chapter helps me have a deeper understanding of how the one thing all groups have in common is that their effectiveness depends on communication. I learned that healthy groups are characterized by ethical goals, interdependence, and many other things. This short animated video elaborates a little more on effective communication, which is a key part of groups. Enjoy.

Healthy groups have many characteristics; the book lists eight, but I will just list a few for you. First, healthy groups have clear goals and expectations that all members agree upon. which creates a common purpose for the group. Second, healthy groups have standards for excellence. This helps the group set expectations and goals. Third, healthy groups have strong communication and collaboration skills. Members of a healthy group are able to share information and ideas effectively, and they are able to work together towards the group’s goals. Finally, healthy groups are able to work through conflicts in a respectful and constructive manner. This helps the group resolve conflicts quickly and stay on track toward their goals. These characteristics of healthy groups enable the group to work together more effectively and achieve greater success, no matter what type of group they are. These are some of the things I learned in Chapter 9. While I read them all, I kept thinking about how many times in my life any group I’ve been in has used these characteristics and how we have succeeded when conflict arises. It just makes me think about how important working in groups is. Even at work, you can see how all of the employees are in groups that help run the store. Where is work? We are always working hand in hand to resolve issues that arise at the store. I believe this chapter is really good at breaking down how groups work, and one would benefit from it.

Sports are a great example of groups that work together towards a common goal.

Chapter 10 reflection

I believe this chapter is very important to all groups because every group needs a leader and all groups eventually have conflict, and in this chapter you will learn the different roles of a group. Every group needs some sort of structure to effectively function. These roles include:

Task roles-sets of behaviors that help a group acquire, process, or apply information that contributes directly to completing a task or goal

Maintenance roles-sets of behaviors that help a group develop and maintain cohesion, commitment, and positive working relationships

Procedure roles-sets of behaviors that provide logistical support, and record the group’s accomplishments and decisions

Shared leadership roles-all members must do their part

These roles bring unique skills and knowledge to the group that are essential to its success. The leader sets the vision and direction, while the other members provide the support and resources to achieve the goal. It also helps to divide and assign tasks, ensuring that everyone is contributing to the group’s success. Another key to success in a group is what they do to have effective meetings. Even though we all hate meetings, they are very beneficial to the group. Practicing effective meeting skills can help the group achieve its goals more efficiently by providing a structured and organized environment. I think it also allows for an atmosphere that encourages open communication and collaboration. Overall, effective meeting skills can help the group stay on task, avoid distractions, and keep the discussion focused on the topics at hand.
In groups, there can be conflict that arises, and with conflict, we would need solutions to solve it. A group goes through three steps to solve their problem. First, the group must identify and define the problem. The group has to define the problem in a way that all group members understand (even if it is an outside agency). Groups need to understand what the issue is and how to solve it. Define the problem in a way that all group members understand (even if it is an outside agency). Groups need to understand what the issue is and how to solve it. Then the group must come to an agreement. Once the group comes to an agreement on a problem, they will draft a problem definition, which is a formal written statement describing the problem. Once the group comes to an agreement on a problem, they will draft a problem definition, which is a formal written statement describing the problem. Second, the group must analyze the problem. The group must figure out as much as possible about the group and ask questions about the problem. There are many more steps to problem-solving groups, but you get the idea. Problem solving and the way you do it are important, not just at work but anywhere else as well. Some people choose to solve problems in a negative and violent way, and others in a more positive way. It’s always best to do it in a positive way.
